World War I And II - 1389 Words
In 1914 World War I broke out and not too long after World War II followed. This conflict led countries against each other and in contrast brought them together. New developments and changes occurred following this war just as they did previous ones. The world is constantly altering itself and wars help speed this up by following with advancements in technology, philosophy, and literature. Change resulting from WWI was either frowned upon or embraced and new forms of expression arose within art, literature, and beliefs. As some authors took on a new way of thinking others were stuck in their ways and preferred a prewar era. Amongst the two wars, World War I and II, the United States was well on its way to becoming a fully modernizedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Traditional literary forms were basically destroyed by the pressures of modernity. Modernism was started due to the belief that old ways of life (prewar) and the rules that went along with them, were no longer relevant during this time. Some believed that using old literary forms was old fashioned while others believed that failure to honor the previous movements resulted in a bad piece of work. Due to people being so used to the post-civil war era it made it difficult for more modernistic writers to become popular among readers. New poems and fictional stories utilize more dream imagery and symbolism rather than that of realism and naturalism. The Snows of Kilimanjaro, written by Ernest Hemmingway, captures the ideas of modernism in the story about Harry and how he looks back on his life. He opens his story with the image of a lone leopard who sought the tip of Kilimanjaro or ââ¬Å"The House of Godâ⬠. Adding also another very recognizable animal the Hyena representing where he is now dying in the plains. These two areas and creatures associated with them are commonly used to represent different things. The events that take place in the plains are horrible and tragic while the good events are repr esented by the mountain where his best memories are held. At the end of the story Henry dies and a plane flyââ¬â¢s over the top of Kilimanjaro which symbolizes that he will live an eternal life due to the choices Henry had made in his

Applying Alfred Adlers Personality Theory to George W...
When choosing a ââ¬Å"famousâ⬠person on which to do my research proposal on I decided on one of my favorite presidents in my time. George W. Bush seemed to be the most ââ¬Å"realâ⬠president we have had in office since the 90ââ¬â¢s. Next, I chose Adlerââ¬â¢s theory to apply to Bush do to the fact that is the theorist that most closely applied to Bushââ¬â¢s life. Let ââ¬Ës start with some back ground about George W. Bush and then apply Adlerââ¬â¢s theory. George W Bush was born on July 6, 1946. He was born in New Haven Connecticut where his father was attending Yale University. Georgeââ¬â¢s father had served in World War II as a Navy pilot ; he was using his GI bill like many other veterans to get back into the flow of civilian life. He became the 43rd president of the United States on Januar y 20, 2001. (Wade, 1999) Now on to how Alder applies to George W Bushââ¬â¢s life. First letââ¬â¢s start with the where bush stands in his family constellation. He is the first born of six children. (Wade, 1999) According to Adler prediction the first child is the ââ¬Å"problem child.â⬠First born children are achievement orientated and feel entitled to rank. Since they were born first they always prefer to be on top. (FragerFadiman, 2013)According to research done parents are more anxious with their first born and therefore push them harder then any of their other children. Research also shows that many first bornââ¬â¢s are type A personalities. (FragerFadiman, 2013) He tried hard all his life to stay on top in his parents eyes. George has always been an achiever. When he was young he attended Camp Longhorn in the Texas Hill Country. (Wade, 1999) Even at Camp he received the highest honor by receiving the Campfire Lighter Award. You can only receive it once and you receive it by being an outs tanding camper. (Wade, 1999)Since his was young George has followed in his fatherââ¬â¢s footsteps. The Indians and Human Progress free essay sample
The Indians, and Human Progressâ⬠written by Howard Zinn and ââ¬Å"The City on the Hillâ⬠written by Larry Schweikert and Allen Michael I have analyzed three specific topics/concepts that have been presented by both authors. The first topic that I observed was Christopher Columbus. Howard Zinnââ¬â¢s article was mainly focused on Columbus while Larry S. and Allen M. ââ¬â¢s article covered many explorers including Columbus. Howard Zinn more wrote his view on Columbus as a story as the other authors wrote a lot of facts and what you would call ââ¬Å"boringâ⬠information. Both of the authors included gory details of Columbusââ¬â¢s expedition which didnââ¬â¢t create the same ââ¬Å"heroicâ⬠effect that I learnt from earlier years. These two inserts also might differ because one is a Patriotââ¬â¢s History of the United States and the other is a Peopleââ¬â¢s History of the United States. My Second topic that I noticed after reading both inserts is how these early explorers changed the world in different ways. When Marco Polo and others traveled to China they brought back tales of wealth and unusual goods. Portugal explorers dispatched ships to Africa and brought back ivory and gold then transported and sold slaves to varies Mediterranean estates. Christopher Columbus discovered Islands in the Bahamas, Cuba, and a ââ¬Å"New Worldâ⬠. On the other hand the insert form ââ¬Å"Columbus, The Indians, and Humans Progressâ⬠talks about how Columbus explored the Islands of the Bahamas and discovered the traits of the Arawaks Indians. Columbus brought back slaves to England. Both inserts explain what these explorersââ¬â¢ intentions were and what they brought back. Overall, these articles differ because one is mainly on Columbus and the other is on all explorers. Finally my last topic is on the concept of greed. Greed came into both of these articles quite a few times. In the second paragraph of the insert ââ¬Å"Columbus, The Indians, and Human Progressâ⬠Columbus wrote about how the Arawaks would make fine servants even after these Indians greeted Columbusââ¬â¢s people with gifts and food. Gold was also a great cause for greed; Columbus forced the natives to go find gold otherwise they would get killed. Similarly in the insert ââ¬Å"The City on the Hallâ⬠explorers such as Marco Polo and Prince Henry, all brought back silks, spices, slaves and so on to their homeland. Also many explorers such as the Spanish ruined the nativesââ¬â¢ lives by killing them, making them slaves, and taking all their houses and food away. This insert shows how cruel many explores were, where as Howard Zinnââ¬â¢s only talks about the cruelty of Columbus. The overall point of view or perspective of these authors was that many explorers werenââ¬â¢t what people made them up to be. In fact in reality these explores were quite unruly when it came to territory, Fame and Money. In the insert the ââ¬Å"They City on the Hillâ⬠an example would be in 1517 the Protestant Reformation fostered a fierce and bloody competition for power and territory between Catholic and Protestant nations that reinforced national concerns. The information in a way is directly down grading these explorers which shows how the authors felt. In the insert ââ¬Å"The City on the Hillâ⬠an example of this would be when Columbus got into a fight with Indians who refused to trade as many bow and arrows as he and his men wanted so in result they ran swords through two of the natives who then bled to death. The difference between these two books show how different the nature of writing is, like from being factual to narrative. It also shows how bias some authors and how unreliable books can be. These views might also depend on what year the article was written, who the book was written to inform, and where the book was written to sell. In different places in the world the views on History are going to differ by the way you look at it.
